Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sidekick?

Sidekick is a clinically-validated, social-health game and service for smartphones that allows you to improve your health and well-being by doing missions in three categories: Food, Mind, and Exercise.

How do I download the app?

Follow this link to download the Sidekick app on your smartphone. If you open this link on your computer, a link to download will be sent to your smartphone via SMS (standard messaging rates apply; please contact your carrier for rates).

You will then be directed to Google Play or the App Store to download the app on your smartphone in a few easy steps.

How do I create an account?

Once you have downloaded the Sidekick app on your smartphone (see above), open the app. Tap “Sign Up” in the lower left corner. You can sign up through your existing Facebook or Google accounts, or create an account manually by entering: full name, email address, and a password. Then tap “Sign Up”.

What is an access code?

If you are using Sidekick as a part of a health promotion program, you will be provided an access code in an intro email that activates your program. The access code makes it available for you to join a team.

You are asked to give the access code when you sign-up. If you don’t have an access code yet, just continue without entering a code. You can register your access code later by going to the main screen and choose the symbol, then Access code and enter the access code where you are asked for a New Access Code.

Where can I find my access code?

The Sidekick team will make sure you and your provider receive the access code via email before the program beings. Go to the main screen of the application and choose the ≡ symbol, then Access code to enter the access code under New Access Code.

If you believe you should have received an access code and have not, please contact your diabetes educator, company’s HR representative, or support@sidekickhealth.com.

How do I log in?

If you already have an account, click the text below the yellow “Create Account” button on the landing page (the one with the horizontally moving Sidekick characters). From there, either sign in with Facebook, Google, or the credentials you submitted when initially creating an account, i.e., the email and password.

If you haven’t created account previously, click the yellow “Create Account” button and follow the instructions. You can use either external providers like Facebook and Google, or you can create a new account by typing in an email and password.

I forgot my password. What to do?

From the landing page, click the text below the yellow “Create Account” button as if you were going to log in. From that screen click “Forgot password?” below the green “Login” button. Enter your email in the textfield and hit the blue “Reset Password” button. You should get instructions on how to reset your password in an email.

I forgot my email. What to do?

Unfortunately, there is not much we can do about that. If you forget your email, you’ll have to create a new account.

What is a Health Points?

You can earn health points by completing Food, Move and Mind missions. During Happy Hours you get double health points for selected activities. By being active you make it possible for UNICEF to provide clean water for children in need. That is what we Sidekickers call doing good by doing well.

What fitness trackers does Sidekick sync with?

Currently, Sidekick syncs with Fitbit, as well as Apple Health and Google Fit. Please contact support@sidekickhealth.com to request support for your tracker.

Here's a step-by-step guide to connect your Fitbit, Apple Health, or Google Fit to Sidekick:

  1. Open the Step Counter Mission (in the Move category).
  2. Tap the "switch" icon (arrows) in the upper right corner.
  3. Choose Fitbit, Apple Health, or Google Fit from the list.
  4. Provide your credentials when prompted.
  5. Allow Sidekick to read your activity and exercise data.

How do I connect my step counter with Sidekick?

Sidekick uses the built-in pedometer on your smartphone to track you steps. Your phone should be logging your steps into Apple Health or Google Fit, then we connect Sidekick to Apple Health or Google Fit to get the steps into Sidekick.

The first step is to make sure that you are tracking your steps into Apple Health or Google Fit:

  • Open Health/Fit (should be an icon on your dashboard) to see if you have any steps logged.

If you are not getting you steps into Apple Health you have to enable Fitness Tracking in Settings.

  • Go to Settings / Privacy / Motion & Fitness. There you have to enable Fitness Tracking and Health. If this is all good you should be able to connect Sidekick to Apple Health
  • Open Sidekick / Move / Step Counter

How do I report a bug?

Logging Food, Activity, Mind, and other Missions
Food Logging:

How much is a serving size?

It depends on what you are having, but in general one serving of fruit or vegetable is about the size of your fist.

Examples of one serving of veggies:

  • 2 medium sized carrots or tomatoes / 1 bell pepper / 1 cup of raw or cooked vegetables, beans or peas / 2 cups of raw leafy greens (2 handfuls).

Examples of one serving of fruits:

  • 1 apple, banana, orange, or pear / 1 cup of berries or grapes.

Physical Activity Logging:

How do I log physical activity?

Choose Move on the main screen. There you can choose from a variety of different exercises and activities to log.

Sidekick uses the built-in sensors on your phone to automatically track your steps, bike rides, and running sessions. Tap the Claim button on the bottom at the end of the workout or at the end of the day to earn your kicks.

You can also set up your exercise routine and select an exercise (or multiple exercises) and tap continue to save them for later use under Exercise.

There is also a variety of different physical activities to log in Activities. Just set the duration of the activity and tap Save to claim your kicks.

What if I want to log physical activity that is not in Sidekick?

If your activity isn’t already on the Activity list, you can just list the most similar activity you can find. If you feel like there is an activity missing from the list, please email us your suggestion: support@sidekickhealth.com

Weight Logging:

How often should I be logging my weight?

We suggest once a week, preferably in the morning.

However, if you feel like you are fixating on the weight we recommend taking a step back to just enjoy your journey to better health. Also, a better gauge may be measuring inches around your body and taking progress photos to monitor the progress you are making.

Coaches, Administrators, Coordinators Questions:

Why should I use SidekickHealth and how can I learn more?

If you are considering using SidekickHealth and we haven't spoken to you, contact us at sales@sidekickhealth.com! We can get you started in minutes. :)

How do I get started using SidekickHealth for my class?

Before you introduce SidekickHealth to your class, you should have received a coach onboarding email from your contact person at SidekickHealth, as well as a quick training (in-person or virtually) in how and why to use Sidekick with your program participants. When you have received the information by email, as well as the coach onboarding/training you should be good to go!

Challenges & Rewards:

What is a Challenge?

A challenge is either an individual or team competition, which helps you work towards your weekly goals. It can be a fun way to boost activity.

How do I sign up for a Challenge?

Challenges are accessed through the Challenges icon in the top right corner of the main screen. You can either join in an open challenge or create your own individual challenge, or invite up to 5 friends to compete. When you are a part of a health promotion program you are automatically signed up for various challenges.

Are participants automatically placed into Challenges?

Yes, when you are taking part in a health promotion program you are automatically signed up for weekly challenges. However, if you are using Sidekick on your own, you are not automatically put in challenges but can sign up for challenges yourself based on your goals.

What are Badges and Pins?

Badges and Pins are honor rewards for your good health behaviour and dedication. You collect badges and pins by reaching certain milestones, such as using the Sidekick app for 30 days in a row, finishing 1000 health improving missions, or winning team competitions, just to name a few. You can view your badges and pins by going to the main screen, choosing the ≡ symbol on the top left, and choose Pins & Badges.
